Let’s Talk Speech and Language Therapy is in-network with Blue Shield PPO in Mission Viejo. Being in-network means we bill Blue Shield directly rather than handing you the paperwork. This page explains what network status changes and how to tell which Blue plan you hold. It also covers the questions worth asking before your first appointment. Being in-network and having a visit covered are two separate things entirely.

Jill Dews, M.A., CCC-SLP founded Let’s Talk in Mission Viejo in 2002. That is 24 years of working with families across South Orange County. She earned her Master’s in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Long Beach. Before opening her practice she worked inside the Capistrano Unified School District. She has seen speech coverage from the school side as well.

Is Let’s Talk In-Network With Blue Shield PPO?

Let’s Talk is in-network with Blue Shield PPO, along with three other major carriers. Those three are Anthem Blue Cross, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. Our billing team confirmed all four in August 2026, though carrier lists shift often. Our insurance and payment options page carries everything we currently accept.

Being in-network means we hold an agreed rate with your plan. The claim goes to Blue Shield rather than landing on your kitchen table. What you owe still depends on your deductible, your copay and your coinsurance. Network status controls the price of a visit, not whether your plan pays yet.

Is Blue Shield of California the Same as Anthem Blue Cross?

Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross are two separate companies operating across the state. Both put a blue emblem on the card, which is where confusion starts. Parents mix them up constantly, and search engines do the same thing. We are in-network with both, so either card gets your child in the door here. Spend thirty seconds with the card before you call anyone:

  • The company name sits near the logo, usually along the top edge
  • The plan type, such as PPO or Trio HMO, sits below it or on the back
  • The member services number prints on the back, often more than once
  • The subscriber name may differ from your child’s name, so note both
  • A group number appears when the plan comes through an employer

Those five details answer nearly everything a benefits representative asks. Write them somewhere you will be able to find again later. Families from Casta del Sol and Painted Trails have called the wrong carrier before now. That mistake costs an afternoon and tells you nothing useful about your coverage.

Does Blue Shield Cover Pediatric Speech Therapy?

Coverage depends on your individual policy rather than on the carrier name by itself. Most plans want documented medical necessity from a licensed clinician before paying for therapy. Speech or language impairment was 21 percent of California special education enrollment in 2020. That share stood at 25 percent in 2011, so these remain common childhood needs.

Plans usually sort care into two buckets, and this is where pediatric claims fall down. Habilitative care helps a child build a skill for the very first time. Rehabilitative care restores a skill that a child lost after injury or illness. Bring both words to your call and ask which one applies to you.

What Is the Difference Between In-Network and Out-of-Network Care?

In-network means an agreed rate and direct billing, while out-of-network means neither of those. With an out-of-network provider you pay first and then ask your plan for money back. Some Blue Shield policies include out-of-network benefits and some include none whatsoever. The table below shows what genuinely changes between the two arrangements.

What to compareIn-networkOut-of-network
Who sets the rateYour plan and the practice, by contractThe practice sets its own fee
Who sends the billThe practice bills Blue Shield directlyYou pay first, then file a claim
PaperworkHandled on your behalfYou submit a superbill yourself
DeductibleUsually the lower of the twoOften separate and noticeably higher
When money movesSettled at the visitWeeks later, if the plan pays
PredictabilityYou know the number beforehandYou find out after the claim clears

Private pediatric therapy here runs roughly 150 to 250 dollars per session without insurance. Evaluations generally land between 200 and 400 dollars each. A deductible you have not met yet can make in-network cost the same. Ask Blue Shield where your deductible stands before assuming anything about price.

Do I Need a Referral Before Starting Speech Therapy With Blue Shield?

Referral rules depend on which Blue Shield product you hold rather than on the carrier itself. PPO plans and HMO plans from the same company follow different rules entirely. A parent holding an HMO card who assumes PPO rules can walk into a denied claim. Confirm your plan type first, then ask whether a physician referral is required.

Some plans want prior approval before treatment begins, which is a separate step. Ask who submits that request, since the answer varies between plans. Coverage for pediatric speech therapy follows different rules than adult care does. Getting both answers in writing protects you if a claim is questioned later.

How Do You Verify Your Blue Shield Speech Therapy Benefits?

Call the member services number printed on the back of your Blue Shield card. Keep the card, your child’s birth date and the subscriber name to hand. Six questions cover nearly everything, and the call usually runs 10 to 15 minutes:

  • Is outpatient pediatric speech therapy a covered benefit under this plan
  • Does the plan require a physician referral or prior approval before treatment
  • What is my deductible this year, and how much have I already met
  • Does the plan cap how many therapy visits I get per calendar year
  • Is the initial evaluation billed separately from the treatment sessions
  • Does the policy cover habilitative therapy, or only rehabilitative therapy

Write down the representative’s name and ask for a reference number before hanging up. Two Blue Shield policies can give you two different answers to the same question. That reference protects you if a claim gets questioned months later, so keep it somewhere findable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is speech therapy covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Blue Cross Blue Shield is a national association rather than one insurance company. In California the member companies are Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross. Plans commonly exclude disorders with a developmental or congenital cause, which matters for children. Roughly 1 in 14 American children aged 3 to 17 has a speech or language disorder. Read the company name on your card, then call the number there.

Does Blue Shield require prior approval for speech therapy?

Many plans require a physician referral or prior approval before outpatient therapy begins. Referral and authorization rules vary between plan types sold by the same insurance company. Your pediatrician can document concerns using the CDC milestone checklists written for your child’s age. Confirm the requirement before scheduling, since starting without approval can lead to a denied claim.

What happens if Blue Shield denies my speech therapy claim?

A denied claim is a decision you can challenge rather than a final answer. Ask which coverage rule the plan applied to your child’s claim. Many denials turn on documentation, and the appeal process lets your clinician supply more detail. Ask Blue Shield for the denial reason in writing before filing anything further.

Can my child get school speech services and private therapy together?

School services and private therapy run on separate systems, and a child can receive both. School support comes through an individualized education program aimed at educational access. Children under three may qualify for early intervention through California’s state program. Ask whether your Blue Shield plan limits private therapy while school services are already running.
