Let’s Talk Speech and Language Therapy is in-network with Cigna PPO in Mission Viejo. That means we bill Cigna directly rather than handing you a stack of claim forms. This page covers something that catches Cigna families out. It is where speech therapy sits inside your benefits. It also walks through plan types, referral rules, and the questions worth asking before you book.
Jill Dews, M.A., CCC-SLP started Let’s Talk in Mission Viejo back in 2002. That comes to 24 years of working with families across South Orange County. She holds a Master’s in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Long Beach. Years inside Capistrano Unified School District classrooms came before she opened her own doors.
Is Let’s Talk In-Network With Cigna?
Let’s Talk is in-network with Cigna PPO, along with three other major carriers. Those three are Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield and UnitedHealthcare. Our billing team last checked all four carriers in August 2026, and these lists do move. You will find the current list on our insurance and payment options page.
Being in-network means a rate for each visit was agreed in advance with Cigna. The billing runs between our office and Cigna without passing through you. The figure you pay comes down to your deductible, your copay and your coinsurance. What the network fixes is the price tag, not who happens to be covering it.
Is Speech Therapy a Medical Benefit or a Behavioral Health Benefit?
Speech therapy almost always sits under your medical benefit rather than behavioral health. This trips up more Cigna families than any other single point. Searching for a Cigna therapist usually surfaces counsellors and psychologists instead of speech-language pathologists. Cigna runs behavioral health under the Evernorth name, and that is a separate network entirely.
| What to check | Medical benefit | Behavioral health benefit |
| What it usually covers | Speech-language pathology, physical and occupational therapy | Counselling, psychology, psychiatry |
| What to ask for by name | Outpatient speech-language pathology | Behavioral or mental health services |
| Where it appears | Rehabilitation or therapy services | Often listed separately, sometimes as Evernorth |
| Which deductible applies | Your medical deductible | Sometimes a separate one |
| Who to call | The medical member services number | The behavioral health number on the card |
Ask for outpatient speech-language pathology by that exact name when you call. Asking about therapy alone routes you to the wrong department more often than not. Families from Casta del Sol and Quail Run have lost an afternoon to that mix-up. The card usually prints two different numbers, so check which one you are dialling.
Does Cigna Cover Pediatric Speech Therapy?
The wording inside your policy decides this, not the logo on the front of your card. Almost all plans ask a licensed clinician to document medical necessity before paying. California schools served more than 800,000 children through special education in 2020. Speech or language impairment sat behind 21 percent of those cases, which makes it familiar territory.
Two categories exist inside most policies, and children’s claims stumble on the line between them. Helping a child develop a skill they never had is called habilitative care. Bringing back a skill lost to injury or illness is called rehabilitative care. Childhood speech work usually lands in the habilitative column, so name it directly.
What Cigna Plan Types Change Your Speech Therapy Coverage?
Cigna sells several plan structures and each one handles referrals and networks differently. The plan name printed on your card decides which rules apply to your child. Two families can both hold Cigna cards and face completely different requirements. Find the plan name first, then ask about these five points:
- Which Cigna plan am I enrolled in, and is it a PPO or an Open Access plan
- Does this plan require a referral before outpatient therapy can begin
- Is my employer plan self-funded, meaning the company sets the coverage rules
- Does the plan cap therapy visits per calendar year or per condition
- Does the policy exclude developmental delays from its speech benefit
Human resources often answers the self-funded question faster than member services will. On a self-funded plan your employer chose the benefit and Cigna processes the claims. That distinction decides who you appeal to when something gets denied. Get the answer in writing so you have something to point at later.

Do I Need a Referral Before Starting Speech Therapy With Cigna?
Referral rules turn on your plan structure rather than on the carrier itself. Open Access plans generally let you see a specialist without a referral first. Other structures want a physician referral or prior approval before therapy begins. Read the plan name on your card, then confirm the rule with Cigna directly.
Prior approval is a separate step from a referral, and plenty of families conflate them. Find out whether the office or the family files it, since practice differs widely. The rules governing pediatric speech therapy sit apart from those written for adults. Ask for both answers in writing before your child’s first appointment.
How Do You Verify Your Cigna Speech Therapy Benefits?
The medical member services number on your card is where real answers live. Pull out the card and note your child’s birth date and the subscriber name first. Six questions will get you through it, usually inside fifteen minutes:
- Is outpatient speech-language pathology covered under my medical benefit
- Which Cigna plan am I enrolled in, and does it require a referral
- Where does my medical deductible stand right now this calendar year
- Does prior approval have to be in place before therapy can begin
- Will the evaluation and the therapy sessions bill under separate codes
- Does the plan limit how many therapy visits I get per year
Record who you spoke to and get a reference number before ending the call. Paying privately, a session here costs 150 to 250 dollars and an evaluation costs 200 to 400. Your deductible position determines whether those figures ever reach you. A reference number is what settles a disputed claim months down the line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cigna cover speech therapy for children?
Coverage turns on your individual policy and on what your employer selected for a self-funded plan. A common exclusion removes cover for disorders with a developmental or congenital cause, which affects many children. Roughly one child in fourteen aged 3 to 17 has a speech or language disorder. Find out from Cigna what paperwork it expects before your first appointment.
Is speech therapy billed as medical care or behavioral health?
Speech-language pathology generally falls under the medical side of your benefits. Coverage often appears alongside physical therapy and other rehabilitation services rather than under mental health. Some plans restrict reimbursement to certain settings or licensed practitioners, so ask about that too. Use the phrase outpatient speech-language pathology when you call so nobody misroutes you.
What should I do if Cigna denies a speech therapy claim?
A denial is a decision you can challenge rather than the end of the conversation. Request the reason in writing, then review it against your plan’s stated coverage rules. Many appeals succeed on documentation, and a clinician can supply a letter showing medical necessity. Note the appeal deadline, since plans set their own and they pass quickly.
Can my child receive school speech services and private therapy?
Schools and private clinics operate independently, so support from one never cancels the other. An individualized education program exists to help a child access classroom learning. Under-threes may instead be eligible for early intervention through California’s state program. Check whether your Cigna plan places limits on private therapy running alongside school support.
