Early Intervention Speech Therapy

Clear evaluations for receptive language, expressive language, and cognitive skills in early childhood.

Early Evaluations for Children

Early intervention evaluations give parents clear answers about their child’s communication and development. At Let’s Talk Speech and Language Therapy, our licensed speech-language pathologists use evidence-based tools to assess receptive language (understanding), expressive language (speaking), and cognitive skills that affect communication.

With more than 20 years of experience, Jill Dews, M.A., CCC-SLP, leads our team in helping families identify strengths, uncover challenges, and create a plan for support. These evaluations provide peace of mind and ensure children get the right help during the most important years of growth.

What to Expect in an Evaluation

Every evaluation begins with a conversation. Our speech-language pathologists meets with you to learn about your child’s development, routines, and concerns. This helps us see the full picture before testing. We then use play-based activities, observation, and standardized tools to evaluate your child’s communication in three main areas:

  • Receptive language – how your child understands words, directions, and questions
  • Expressive language – how your child uses words, phrases, and sentences to communicate
  • Cognitive screening – abilities such as attention, memory, and problem-solving that support communication

When the evaluation is complete, we provide clear results and recommendations. Parents leave with answers, reassurance, and a personalized plan that may include therapy goals or strategies to try at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in an early intervention evaluation?

An evaluation looks at how your child understands language (receptive), how they use words and sentences (expressive), and basic cognitive skills like memory and attention. Parents also share their concerns so the evaluation covers the whole picture.

At what age should my child have an evaluation?

If you are concerned about your child’s speech, language, or development between 12 months and preschool age, it’s a good time to schedule an evaluation. Early support often leads to faster progress.

How long does an evaluation take?

Most evaluations take about 60–90 minutes, depending on your child’s age and needs. Time is built in for play-based observation, parent input, and testing.

What happens after the evaluation?

You’ll receive clear results and recommendations. This may include therapy goals, strategies you can use at home, or next steps if further support is needed.
